Tim McCalmont & Rob Loos at Shepherd's Grove Screening
Fifty years ago in Hollywood, CA a spirited young pastor, a mainline church, and a group of wide-eyed college kids came together to create THE SALT COMPANY -- a band that started what we now know as Contemporary Christian Music and created a Coffee House that opened its doors to runaways, hippies, and drop-outs. Together they helped launch The Jesus Movement and transform the lives of a generation.

I loved watching this! "Salt and Light" tells a remarkable story of God's profound intersection with an unlikely community in a peculiar time. This is just what God does, of course. But when it happened in Hollywood, California in the midst of existential, national, and international turmoil, the lives of many are awakened to the reign of God's love in Jesus Christ--and that changes everything. I watched this with fascination and gratitude for God's great surprise.

A very meaningful documentary. The interviews, music and voice-overs are a work of art and editing. I was especially reminded of how God raises up a witness for every generation when Pastor Don Williams referenced Jesus, the Word “who became flesh and dwelt among us”. Biblically accurate and culturally relevant. I also appreciated learning the creation and history of the “One Way” button. Every generation must find the means to speak truth so that it is heard and read. A work well done and meaningful because you made clear the “reason why” – it’s all about the Lord Jesus Christ. That’s a timeless message.

SALT AND LIGHT is a fascinating story of one source of the Jesus Movement. The new music playing at Christian coffee houses around the USA inspired music still being played today in churches around the world. The revival became so big Time Magazine featured the Jesus Movement on its cover, proving that God was not dead. SALT AND LIGHT: THE MIRACLE IN HOLLYWOOD consists of archival footage, great music, and insightful interviews. It’s well worth watching.

The study of so much church history focuses on what happened hundreds of years ago. “Salt and Light” is an hour devoted to recent church history and how a church and a vision “moved into the neighborhood” of kids during the turbulent 60’s and 70’s and effectively shared Christ in new ways that have set the stage for what’s happening today with any vibrant ministry that cares about engaging contemporary culture with Jesus Christ. I can personally attest to the fact that this video tells the story truthfully and well.

This documentary showed me that you don't need millions of dollars and fancy equipment to preach the gospel. All you need is a passion, a vision, and the Lord himself, and you will be ale to impact many!

If those young people could change their world; what's stopping us from doing the same?

In a word, Wow! This is a story that NEEDED to be told. Amazing significance to the whole Jesus movement, and like they said, it wasn't just Calvary Chapel where it all took place. So interesting to learn (among many things) -- that "One Way" symbol and phrase came from there and then. Such a valuable film!
